چکیده

The subject of adolescence has occupied a unique place in psychiatric training programs: it is the stepchild of both adult and child residencies. This has long been the case, despite the recognition that adolescence poses special problems in diagnosis and treatment and despite the fact that in residency programs, both adult and child, the caseload consists of many patients in the 12-20 age bracket. As a step in the direction of remedying this situation at Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital of Philadelphia, a weekly pilot conference was initiated to explore the needs for training in adolescence and the means of meeting those needs. This conference was set up for second-year child psychiatry residents and offered as an elective to third-year adult psychiatry residents. Combining both groups of residents presented no difficulties; on the contrary, the mix seemed to act catalytically to bring out differing attitudes and assumptions about a common clinical focus. The dual chairmanship likewise seemed felicitous, especially since the two faculty members in charge spoke a common language arising from many years of intensive discussion of clinical and theoretical problems, and they provided a balance of expertise from the adultand child-oriented vantage points.
